Nothing is more
miraculous than the birth of a child. The wait for that special moment is one of the most
exciting times in a parent’s life. Parents hope, plan, dream, and ask themselves a million and
one questions. Will it be a boy or a girl? Who will they look like? Do they smile, yawn, or even suck their thumbs? Wouldn't
it be great to find out now…
From a yawn, to a stretch, to a smile, expectant parents
can now see and bond with their unborn child in a live-motion
3-D/4-D sonogram. This is not the grainy flat image
that your mother has of you, but an actual 3D picture
plus 4D real time video that will allow you to see
the realistic details of your baby’s body. Who
knows - you might just catch your baby’s first
grin!

Our AOA physicians we feel that it is wise to limit the ultrasound exposure to 30 minutes or less. Due to
positioning and/or time constraints, the sonographer may not be able to get optimal face views at any
particular visit, but will give you whatever she can record at the time of the visit.

Commonly Asked Questions
About Sonograms:
WHY WON’T INSURANCE COVER MY 3D ULTRASOUND? On average most insurance companies only cover two ultrasounds; one in the first trimester (6-13 weeks) to get an accurate due date and the other in the second trimester (16-24 weeks) for the screening of the babies anatomy. A 3D ultrasound is not typically done at an anatomy scan because the clearest pictures are done around 30 weeks as opposed to 16-24 weeks. Plus, a 3D ultrasound is not a medically necessary exam, so insurances are unwilling to pay for the “entertainment ultrasound.”
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SCHEDULE A 3D/4D
ULTRASOUND?
At Advanced OB-GYN Associates we recommend that patients
schedule their 3D/4D ultrasound between 28-32 weeks of their pregnancy. The earlier you come in the more of the whole body
of the baby would be seen at one time. The baby is developed at 16
weeks, but they are very small and not a lot of detail can be seen
with the 3D ultrasound. Later on in the pregnancy, about 26-27 weeks,
the baby “fattens up” which make the features of the baby more detailed
especially the face.
DO I HAVE TO HAVE A FULL BLADDER? No! It is highly recommended that you overly hydrate
(drink more than you’re use to) the week before your ultrasound appointment. This ensures that the amniotic fluid will be adequate for optimal images, but you may use the restroom as many times as needed before, during, and after the ultrasound.
ARE THE PICTURES IN COLOR?
Yes! The pictures that show up on the screen are a sepia flesh tone color. This is the color that will be on the CDs and DVDs. We print out black and white copies for the expectant parents at the visit.
WHY DOES MY BABY’S NOSE LOOK DIFFERENT IN THE 3D/4D ULTRASOUND?
Babies’ faces sometimes appear to be pressed against the ultrasound
transducer on the 3D ultrasound (do not worry this will not harm your
baby) giving the nose a broader, flattened appearance. Other reasons
would be a lack of adequate amniotic fluid, or the baby is positioned
too close to the placenta or uterine wall. Our technician will attempt
to obtain a 3D profile of the face will give parents a better idea of
how the nose will look.
