da Vinci Surgery - A Robotic-Assisted Surgical System
There
is a new type of minimally invasive surgery that
is available to our Garland and Dallas-area patients:
da Vinci Surgery. The da Vinci surgery is a robotic-assisted
method which, in effect, allows for a major surgical
procedure to be done with the use of small incisions. All
three AOA Ob-Gyn surgeons are
trained and certified to use this new surgical
procedure.
The da Vinci Surgical System is designed to provide Advanced Ob-Gyn Associates surgeons
with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Your doctor controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more
precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body.
Though it is often called a "robot," da Vinci cannot act on its
own: Instead, the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor.
Together, da Vinci technology allows your ob-gyn doctor to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. As a
result, you may be able to get back to life faster without the
usual recovery following major surgery.
For most patients, da
Vinci Hysterectomy can offer numerous potential health care
benefits over traditional approaches to vaginal,
laparoscopic or open abdominal hysterectomy, particularly
when performing more challenging procedures like
radical hysterectomy for gynecologic cancer.
Potential women's health care
benefits include:
da Vinci Provides Surgeon with Superior Surgical Tool
Moreover, da Vinci provides
the surgeon with a superior surgical tool for dissection
and removal of lymph nodes during cancer operations,
as compared to traditional open or minimally invasive
approaches.1da
Vinci Hysterectomy also allows your surgeon
better visualization of anatomy, which is especially
critical when working around delicate and confined
structures like the bladder. This means that surgeons
have a distinct advantage when performing a complex,
radical hysterectomy involving adhesions from prior
pelvic surgery or non-localized cancer, or an abdominal
hysterectomy. 2
As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed,
as surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific.
While radical hysterectomy or abdominal hysterectomy
performed using the da
Vinci Surgical System are considered safe and
effective, these procedures may not be appropriate
for every individual. Always ask your AOA doctor about
all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.
More Info About da Vinci Robotic System & Gynecology
Since sometimes medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve certain gynecological symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions.
Some women healthcare issues addressed with the da Vinci Robotic System (but not limited to):
cervical and uterine cancer
uterine fibroids
endometriosis
uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding
Traditional gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding areas, for many years has been the standard approach to most gynecologic procedures. Yet as with most open surgery, significant pain, trauma, long recovery process and threat to surrounding organs and nerves can occur.
For women facing gynecologic surgery, pain, discomfort and extended time away from normal daily activities that usually follows traditional surgery can cause significant anxiety.
da Vinci System Effective for Complex Hysterectomies and other Gynecologic Procedures
Fortunately, in the Dallas area less invasive options are available. Some gynecologic procedures enable surgeons to access the target anatomy using a vaginal approach, which may not require an external incision. But for complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option for you.
Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, our AOA surgeons using the da Vinci System* can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
If your AOA Ob-Gyn doctor recommends a hysterectomy,
you may be a candidate for da Vinci Hysterectomy,
one of the most effective, least invasive treatment
options for a range of uterine conditions. da Vinci Hysterectomy
is performed using the da Vinci™ Surgical
System, which enables surgeons to perform with unmatched
precision and control – using only a few small
incisions.
FACING A HYSTERECTOMY?
Today, your doctor can treat a range of
gynecologic conditions — from chronic pelvic
pain to abnormal bleeding — minimally
invasively with da Vinci® Hysterectomy.
This
surgical procedure requires only a few small
incisions, so you can get back to life faster — without
the usual recovery following major surgery.

News Video - December 2009: Dr. Lux performs Surgery by the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System
Dr. Lux was featured in a news video that appeared on CBS Channel 11. He removed a large ovarian cyst and discussed some of the benefits to patients with this new da Vinci robotic procedure at the Forest Park Medical Center in Dallas. Some advantages to the patient is how it reduces pain, soreness and recovery time.
Videos Showing the da Vinci Robotic Surgery
Here are a couple of videos that show the da Vinci robotic surgery procedure in simple ways: making of a piece of origami and in the peeling of a grape.

While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da
Vinci® System when used in minimally
invasive surgery, individual results may vary. Surgery
with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be
appropriate for every individual. Always ask your doctor
about all treatment options, as well as their risks and
benefits.
